The Quincy Institute (QI) is seeking a reporter with a high degree of motivation and initiative for its online magazine, Responsible Statecraft. The ideal candidate is a self-starter with a demonstrated ability to break news that can drive the foreign-policy conversation and shine a light on the forces and ideologies that have mired the United States in endless wars. The reporter will work closely with RS's editorial team to expose corruption and hypocrisy in the military industrial complex, on Capitol Hill and in the federal government, and will write about issues important to Americans outside the Beltway, including military families and veterans and the economic and health impacts of war on local communities. The reporter will also cover federal elections as they intersect with foreign policy, respond to breaking news, and assist with daily social media and publishing tasks. The reporter reports to the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editor of Responsible Statecraft.
This is a paid, full-time position based in Washington, D.C. (in person three days per week; not remote). Salary range: $70,000 to $80,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401k, Roth IRA, vacation, paid sick leave, life insurance, HSA, FSA, STD, LTD and other supplemental benefits.
Responsibilities:
- Closely follow the daily and weekly news cycle, tracking issues relevant to the mission and the foreign policy and national security landscape in Washington, on Capitol Hill, and internationally.
- Cover events and produce a high tempo of original content for RS (short-form "Qiosks" and longer reported pieces, averaging 2-3 weekly).
- Cultivate sources and break news on a consistent basis.
- Assist with managing and driving engagement on RS's social media platforms.
- Help brainstorm the daily editorial schedule, story ideas, long-term reporting projects and special packages.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Essential qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in U.S. foreign policy, national security and Washington politics.
- Interest in the work of the Quincy Institute and familiarity with the international relations theory of realism and restraint.
- Strong reporting and research skills, with a demonstrated ability to cultivate sources and break news.
- Superior writing skills, with at least 3 years of professional reporting experience and familiarity with AP Style.
- Fluency in driving engagement through social media platforms such as X, TikTok, Instagram and/or LinkedIn.
- Basic understanding of data analysis and presentation.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, non-partisan environment and meet tight deadlines with great attention to detail.
