The Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) seeks an outstanding software developer/scientist to contribute to the continued development of Water Evaluation and Adaptation Planning (WEAP), one of the world's leading platforms for integrated water resources planning and decision support. WEAP is used by governments, utilities, researchers, NGOs, and international organizations worldwide to address drought resilience, climate adaptation, groundwater management, infrastructure planning, agricultural water use, and ecosystem sustainability.
The position combines advanced software engineering with scientific inquiry and close collaboration with researchers, modelers, and practitioners. The successful candidate will work closely with WEAP's lead developer and senior WEAP modellers and, with significant autonomy, translate scientific and policy needs into robust software for a global user community, including advancing AI-assisted workflows that help users build, debug, document, and analyse models.
Key responsibilities:
- Co-lead the full development lifecycle of the WEAP software platform: architecture, design, implementation, testing, documentation, and release.
- Develop and evaluate AI-assisted functionality for constructing, troubleshooting, documenting, interpreting, and analysing WEAP models.
- Collaborate with researchers and modellers to translate scientific and policy needs into software solutions.
- Guide integration of hydrologic, climate, economic, geospatial, and environmental datasets into modelling workflows.
- Support and grow the international WEAP user community.
- Lead the security, integrity, and responsible stewardship of WEAP software and digital assets.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Maintain and evolve the WEAP website and online user resources, including the transition to cloud-based services.
Requirements:
- Computer science degree with 5+ years of relevant professional experience in software development, scientific computing, or modelling systems.
- Excellent software engineering skills, including experience maintaining substantial, long-lived codebases and end-to-end desktop application development.
- Highly preferred: Delphi/Object Pascal, or strong experience with compiled, statically typed languages (C#, C++); native Windows application development; scientific or numerical computing.
- Also valuable: GIS and geospatial processing, APIs and cloud workflows, data engineering and visualization, hydrologic or systems modeling.
- Interest in sustainability, water resources, and environmental systems; strong communication and organizational skills.
Terms: Permanent, full-time (40 hours/week), salary $90,000-$135,000 per year depending on qualifications. On-site in Davis at least four days per week initially. Start date 4 January 2027.
