Welthungerhilfe (WHH) is one of Germany's largest private aid organizations, politically and religiously independent, working toward a world without hunger ("Zero Hunger on a Healthy Planet"). WHH has been present in Sudan since 1982 and currently implements projects in North Darfur, Kassala, Gedaref, River Nile and Red Sea States, focusing on humanitarian assistance and WASH as well as climate-resilient agriculture, natural resource management and economic development of rural communities and IDPs.
The Country Director Sudan will lead an impact-oriented country programme spanning humanitarian assistance and long-term development, representing WHH in humanitarian and development forums, strengthening strategic partnerships, leading resource mobilization and donor engagement, and providing strategic leadership across programme quality, organizational performance, security, people management and operational effectiveness. The role is part of the WHH Global Leadership Team. The position is to be filled as soon as possible with an initial one-year contract and good prospects for extension. Duty station is Khartoum, Sudan if the security situation allows; otherwise the country office is based in Port Sudan.
Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic leadership and overall management of the country programme in a complex and evolving context.
- Lead high-quality humanitarian and development programming, driving innovation and implementation of WHH's Food Systems Approach.
- Ensure financial sustainability through effective resource management, financial stewardship and resource mobilization; diversify the funding base.
- Lead and manage a diverse team, with special attention to national staff development, and lead a high-performing Senior Management Team.
- Ensure effective risk management, safeguarding, security, duty of care and business continuity.
- Build and maintain relationships with international and national organizations and identify strategic partners (CSOs, research, local government, INGOs).
- Serve as the organization's legal representative in Sudan.
- Foster a culture of learning and adjust program capacities and structure to the changing context.
Profile:
- Significant senior leadership experience in fragile and conflict-affected contexts.
- Proven ability to lead large, multidisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams, including remote management.
- Systems leadership connecting strategy, programmes, finance, operations, partnerships and people.
- Experience leading organizational change, transformation and crisis response.
- Extensive experience managing integrated humanitarian and development portfolios.
- Strong track record in resource mobilization and business development.
- Strong external representation and communication skills.
- Full professional proficiency in English; Arabic is an asset.
