The Asia Research Institute (ARI) at the National University of Singapore invites applications from ambitious scholars to conduct cutting-edge humanities or social sciences research on Asia, within the Religion and Globalisation Cluster. The cluster explores changing understandings and experiences of 'religion' in diverse Asian contexts, including secularisation, authority and tradition in contemporary religious discourse and practice, religious networks, and the circulation of ideas and practices among religious communities across Asia. In this recruitment round, ARI seeks scholars working on new technologies and religious change, as well as religious futures past (historical time and futuring imaginations in religion) in Asia. Applicants whose research toolkits include mixed-methods designs are particularly welcome.
Responsibilities: Working under the supervision of the Cluster Leader, fellows will take the lead in organising workshops and conferences, participate in cluster projects, develop new initiatives (including grant applications), and carry out their own writing for publication. Administrative duties and committee work will also form part of the position.
Requirements: A PhD from a reputable university, a well-established publication record and scholarly international visibility in their field. PhD candidates may apply if their graduation is confirmed by the start date at ARI (an official Registrar's letter is required). Candidates with more than 2 years of post-PhD research experience may be considered for the Research Fellowship, with a publication record commensurate with their time post-PhD and clear plans for research and publication beyond their doctoral work.
Terms: Two-year appointment, commencing Jun/Jul 2027 or Dec 2027/Jan 2028. Postdoctoral Fellowship remuneration is S$6,000 per month; Research Fellowship from S$6,250 per month (all-in, inclusive of housing and living stipends). University housing is not provided. Travel assistance is available to eligible candidates, along with support for fieldwork and conference attendance. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are eligible for provident fund benefits. Any offer is conditional on NUS approval and an Employment Pass or other applicable work pass from Singapore's Ministry of Manpower.
The closing date for applications is 9 October 2026. Please note that no extension will be given.
HOW TO APPLY:
Submit a single combined PDF through the online application system (attach under the CV column) containing: a CV (max 3 single-spaced pages); a synopsis of proposed research activities (max 2 single-spaced pages) covering how it relates to prior doctoral work, how it contributes to the ARI research cluster, and publication plans over the 2-year term; and at least one short published work sample, preferably in English. Include names and contact details of at least 2 referees. Only fully completed applications are considered. The closing date is 9 October 2026 and no extension will be given.
