MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation working in 32 countries to remove landmines and unexploded ordnance and to help governments safely manage weapons and ammunition. After ten years as a mine action programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina, MAG is re-establishing its presence there to deliver a sub-regional weapons and ammunition management project. Based in Sarajevo, the project will work with agreed security and defence forces in three countries to reduce the risk of destabilisation by increasing the safety and security of state-controlled weapons.
Job purpose: The Country Director provides strategic leadership and acts as MAG's primary representative in the Western Balkans. They are accountable to MAG HQ for re-establishing, implementing and managing the programme, including monitoring and evaluation, and for integrating strategic, programmatic and operational functions.
Key responsibilities:
- Strategic leadership: develop and implement policies and procedures for programme design, delivery, monitoring and evaluation.
- Contract and financial management: oversee the programme budget, donor compliance, value for money, forecasting and financial risk.
- Compliance and risk: manage risk and ensure compliance with contractual, statutory and MAG requirements.
- Representation and donor liaison: represent MAG with donors, national and local authorities, defence and security forces, and the NGO community, and support business development.
- Security and asset management: oversee health, safety and security plans for staff, assets and resources.
- Human resources: build and lead a multidisciplinary, multicultural team.
Requirements: substantial senior management experience internationally in complex environments; proven experience managing large-scale projects, including monitoring and evaluation, risk and contract compliance; strong people management skills; business development and donor negotiation experience; financial, administrative and HR systems management; understanding of the Western Balkans context; knowledge of institutional donors (EU, UN, governments); excellent written and spoken English.
Benefits: £60,728 per annum including basic salary and all allowances; in-country accommodation; a minimum of six weeks' leave per year; three international flights home per year; comprehensive insurance. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract, advertised subject to funding.
