Scientist - Aerosols and Climate in Arid Regions
The Qatar Environment & Energy Research Institute (QEERI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) and Qatar Foundation, is seeking a highly motivated, impact-driven Research Scientist to join a multidisciplinary team tackling environmental challenges related to the impacts of atmospheric aerosols on climate in arid regions. Of particular interest are candidates with a strong research track record in quantifying the climate effects of aerosols, including new particle formation, aerosol optical properties, and aerosol-cloud interactions. Responsibilities: lead data analysis and interpretation of existing aerosol and climate datasets to advance understanding in arid regions; design, execute and lead field measurement campaigns characterising aerosol properties (new particle formation, size distributions, optical properties, chemical composition); investigate aerosol-cloud interactions and their radiative forcing implications in arid and semi-arid environments, focused on the Arabian Peninsula; integrate observational data with regional and global atmospheric models; publish peer-reviewed research and present at conferences; engage in capacity building, technical reporting and knowledge transfer to policymakers; lead competitive research funding applications; and mentor postgraduate students and early-career researchers. Requirements: PhD in Atmospheric Science, Environmental/Chemical/Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry or related field; minimum 3 years post-PhD research experience; proficiency with data analysis tools (Python, R, MATLAB, IGOR Pro); experience designing/conducting field measurements and troubleshooting research-grade instruments; hands-on experience with aerosol instrumentation (SMPS, CCN, ACMS, nephelometer, aethalometer); proven peer-reviewed publication record; and strong communication and collaboration skills. HBKU offers an attractive compensation package including a tax-free salary, accommodation allowance, annual paid leave and medical insurance.
