ABOUT PURE EARTH

Pure Earth is a global leader in improving public health and development outcomes by reducing exposure to lead and other toxic pollutants. We work closely with governments to embed evidence-based, sustainable solutions into public systems at the national scale. By translating data into action and pairing technical expertise with local partnerships, Pure Earth designs and delivers practical interventions that reduce pollution and poisoning risks, strengthen public response systems, and support long-term health and economic progress.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Remediation Manager is responsible for providing technical guidance and training on intervention activities within the Pure Earth’s Global Lead Program including those focused on contaminated site assessment, risk reduction, project design, and implementation of risk mitigation measures. It is anticipated that many such contaminated sites will be related to informal used lead acid battery (ULAB) recycling. The Technical Remediation Manager will also collaborate in the development of technical publications and resources, and may represent Pure Earth with donors, governments, and other stakeholders, as appropriate.

Reporting to the Senior Technical Advisor, the Technical Remediation Manager will sit within Pure Earth’s Technical Unit, working alongside colleagues from the Programs Department and other internal and external technical advisors.

• Provide technical support, coaching, and field training to staff and consultants implementing projects for the Global Lead Program in the countries with Pure Earth presence. This will include training on the use of portable XRFs, environmental sampling, basic health and safety measures, and site remediation alternatives.
• Actively support the collection, quality assurance, analysis, and use of environmental and exposure data to inform intervention design, evaluate impact, and share results internally and externally.
• Represent Pure Earth and Pure Earth interests at specific events or meetings as requested by Pure Earth.
• Assist with research and publication of articles that evaluate project impact and/or assess the scope of lead pollution or other focal areas.
QUALIFICATION

• MPhil, MSc, or PhD is preferred. We are looking for a background in Environmental Public Health, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, or related Environmental Sciences. Equivalent professional experience in these fields will also be strongly considered.

• Experience leading training and developing training materials.
• Exceptional analytical skills and experience in driving evidence-based decisions.
• Very strong solution-driven attitude with a high degree of pragmatism including the ability to balance technical rigor and on-the-ground feasibility. Responsiveness and client-oriented approach.
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse and multicultural teams with members in multiple locations at the same time.
• Working knowledge of international guidance related to lead and mercury (e.g., WHO, UNEP, Minamata Convention).
• High motivation and attention to detail.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including written and oral fluency in English. Multilingual capabilities are a plus.
• Willingness to travel internationally and to work flexible hours across time zones.
• Familiarity with the formal and informal ULAB recycling industry a plus.
• Experience with sources of mercury pollution (e.g., artisanal small-scale gold mining) is an additional advantage.
• Authorization to work in the US is required.
