Senior Manager, International Policy and Advocacy
Summary:
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a strategic advocacy role in the Policy and Advocacy team at Climate Group. The Senior Manager, International Policy and Advocacy will play a crucial role in strengthening the influence of leading state and regional governments globally whilst engaging with national governments and multilateral stakeholders to advance our climate goals.
The post holder will be a key point of contact for external stakeholders including national governments and UN systems, who they will work to influence together with wider the wider Policy and Advocacy team.
This is a unique opportunity to work within the international climate advocacy space and be exposed to key debates ahead of COP31 and COP32 while supporting the delivery climate action, fast.
This a full-time position that will require frequent international travel.
About the role:
The Senior International Policy and Advocacy Manager is part of the Governments and Policy team at Climate Group.
The role reports to the Head of Policy and Advocacy and works closely with our regional government relations team (for Europe, Americas, Australia, Africa and Asia) and the Under2 Coalition – the largest global network of states and regions committed to reducing emissions in line with the Paris Agreement.
In particular, the role will lead Climate Group’s engagement with the UNFCCC processes and take a leading role in our rapidly developing work on fossil fuel phaseout. In addition, this role strategically connects our systems transitions work (industry, energy, transport, food and built environment) into relevant international processes. The role also leads our COP related advocacy and other key international agendas, for example the G7, G20, Climate Energy Ministerial.
A critical and key aspect of the role is working with the International Climate Politics (ICP) Hub to connect the political intelligence and insights of governments with the broader international non-state actor climate community. The ICP Hub is an independent initiative supported by the European Climate Foundation.
The role holder will be required to represent Climate Group at key convenings at international level such as COPs, Climate Week NYC and other relevant meetings. This will involve a significant amount of travel.
Key responsibilities will include:
o Strategy development and build influence: deliver an international advocacy strategy, as part of the Policy and Advocacy team, working closely with colleagues across Climate Group and external stakeholders. This includes building trust with high level stakeholders, identifying international intervention opportunities and routes for influence.
o Political and advocacy analysis and thought leadership: lead the publication of joint statements, coordinate government messaging on key international moments, analyse and distil relevant information from the ICP Hub and other intelligence sources for Under2 Coalition governments and other relevant networks. The focus of advocacy will include alignment with the Under2 Coalition’s wider priorities including climate finance, CHAMP and ensuring that the voice of state and regional governments is effectively represented in the COP process through our role in the LGMA constituency.
o Business development and project management: Design, develop and lead on business development related to creative and innovative international advocacy projects, in particular those that showcase the role of subnational governments. This includes ensuring diverse and inclusive approaches, budget management and matrixed/indirect management of any relevant colleagues, empowering and delegating tasks as needed.
o High level relationship building and networking: Maintain a close working relationship with COP Presidency Teams, relevant UN stakeholders and multilateral actors for our international advocacy. This includes working relationships with other key partners such as the ICP Hub Network, C40 Cities and network country leads, maximising opportunities for vertical integration
o Represent Climate Group at key international meetings (i.e. COP, UNFCCC intersessional, Climate Week NYC) to deliver necessary outputs.

About you:
We are looking for a dynamic individual with a strong network in international climate advocacy to support the Head of Advocacy and Policy in interacting with key international stakeholders to drive initiatives and actions that help to deliver the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The ideal candidate will be a team player with strong communications skills that are put to excellent use in developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders. They will have an approach that ensures that goals, plans and outcomes are clearly communicated within their team, holding self and others accountable.
The nature of the role requires exceptional attention to detail and strong organisational skills, as well as the ability to multitask and prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter with the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and work independently as needed.

Essential:
o Deep understanding of the international climate advocacy landscape, particularly with respect to non-party stakeholders agenda.
o Experience working with national government departments.
o Experience of strategy development and agility to respond to changing landscape while utilising relationships internally and externally.
o Project development and management experience, including management of budgets and staff.
o Exceptional relationship management skills and confidence in working with and influencing colleagues, senior team members and mid-level stakeholders across business and government.
o Strong skills in dispute and challenge resolution with the ability to turn challenges into opportunities that benefit goals of the organisation.
o Approach that drives efficiency and accountability across workstreams while managing sensitive topics and ensuring confidentiality where required.
o Clear communicator with excellent writing skills.
o Understanding of GDPR rules and utmost discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive information.
Desirable:
o Experience of working internationally and across different time zones.
o Experience of leading meetings and large events.
o Experience of working in the not-for-profit sector.
o Ability to communicate in languages other than English, preferably UN languages.
o Ability to start work within a relatively short timeframe.
o Operating knowledge of HubSpot.

This is a permanent position. The salary offered is £47,160 to £49,929 per annum, based on experience.
