The OPCW's mission is to implement the Chemical Weapons Convention to achieve a world free of chemical weapons and to contribute to international security and stability, general and complete disarmament, and global economic development. The Organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2013.

The Chemical Demilitarisation Branch assesses and facilitates compliance of States Parties with their obligations related to chemical weapons by implementing the verification regime for chemical weapons (CW) and CW-related facilities under Articles IV, V and the relevant parts of the Verification Annex, and by supporting the verification regime for challenge inspections and investigations of alleged use.

Responsibilities:
- Develop, support and implement a consistent verification regime at CW storage, destruction and production facilities.
- Review and analyse declarations, plans for destruction, facility information and annual destruction reports submitted by States Parties.
- Prepare and negotiate facility agreements and detailed plans for verification of CW destruction; submit plans to the Executive Council.
- Assess scientific and technical information on destruction technologies, operational parameters and monitoring devices, and evaluate methods of destruction during initial visits and final engineering reviews.
- Plan and prepare inspections at CW-related facilities, instruct inspection teams, monitor on-site progress and review inspection reports.
- Provide technical input to Secretariat reports, support the Scientific Advisory Board and States Parties, and lead knowledge management on verification at CW-related facilities.
- Provide technical and lecturing support for training of inspectors, National Authorities and staff; participate as an inspector in visits and challenge inspections; represent the Secretariat at international events.

Requirements:
- Advanced university degree in chemistry or chemical engineering (a first-level degree with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu).
- Minimum 7 years of relevant experience in chemical demilitarisation and/or chemical weapons technology with a Master's degree, or 9 years with a first-level degree.
- Enhanced ICT, analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills; ability to plan and work under pressure; excellent oral and written communication; ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Fluency in English is essential; a good working knowledge of another official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is desirable.
- Desirable: knowledge management training, experience in disarmament verification regimes, international experience, and experience working in toxic environments wearing PPE.

Contract: Fixed-term Professional appointment, grade P4, for two years with a six-month probationary period. Estimated monthly remuneration: USD 10,372 (depending on post adjustment and family status).
