The CGIAR Consortium for Red Palm Weevil Control (C4RPWC) is a multi-partner initiative funded by the International Affairs Office of the UAE Presidential Court and the Gates Foundation, and led by ICARDA. It develops and scales science-based solutions for managing the Red Palm Weevil in low- and middle-income countries. The Capacity Building Officer coordinates and supports the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, documentation and continuous improvement of capacity development activities across the program. The role reports to the C4RPWC Program Manager and has a dotted-line technical relationship with the ICARDA Capacity Development and Training Team Lead in Rabat, Morocco. A major focus is coordinating Training-of-Trainers, technical training, Farmer Field Schools and extension-related learning, the Young Career Program, e-learning and training materials, and regional knowledge exchange.
Main responsibilities:
1. Capacity development planning and coordination: coordinate the C4RPWC Capacity Development Plan and annual training calendar; identify capacity gaps with workstream leads, country teams and partners; coordinate activities across the UAE, Egypt, Tunisia and other participating countries; act as focal point for liaison with ICARDA's Capacity Development team.
2. Training, ToT and learning materials: coordinate ToT and technical training on biological control, biotechnology, digital technologies, Citizen Science, GAP/IPM, data management and technology adoption; manage participant selection, logistics, evaluations and follow-up; turn research outputs into manuals, guides, videos and e-learning modules.
3. Young Career, farmer and stakeholder capacity development: coordinate the Young Career Program (PhD, MSc, postdoctoral and research assistants); support Farmer Field Schools, field days, Communities of Practice and South-South knowledge exchange.
4. Monitoring, evaluation and reporting: maintain a capacity-development tracker, work with the MEL team, apply pre/post assessments, and prepare inputs for periodic reports.
5. Partnerships and knowledge management: coordinate with partners, document good practices and success stories, maintain a repository of training products, and recommend improvements.
Requirements: Bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences, agricultural extension, education, capacity development, international development or a related field (master's desirable); at least 5 years of relevant experience in capacity development, training, agricultural extension or research-for-development; demonstrated experience designing and coordinating ToTs, workshops, Farmer Field Schools or e-learning; ability to translate technical knowledge into practical learning materials; knowledge of adult learning, training-needs assessment and curriculum development; strong digital skills (Microsoft 365, online learning tools); excellent English, Arabic highly desirable; willingness to travel.
Terms: Nationally recruited staff position open to UAE nationals and residents. Initial 3-year contract, renewable, with competitive salary, medical insurance, 30 days annual leave, and maternity and paternity leave.
