The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is a regional NGO, established in 1993, dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights and strengthening the human rights movement in the Arab region. It holds consultative status with the UN ECOSOC and observer status with the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights.
The Egypt Researcher develops and implements a programme of research, network-building and advocacy aimed at advancing human rights in Egypt, taking into account the impact of Egypt's foreign policy on neighbouring countries and the influence of regional and global powers. The role identifies, analyses, documents and reports on major trends and patterns of human rights violations in Egypt and the political, legal, institutional and social conditions that enable them. The researcher serves as CIHRS's in-house expert on the Egyptian context and works closely with the CIHRS Egypt representative.
Key responsibilities:
- Monitor and analyse political, legal, social, economic and security developments affecting human rights in Egypt.
- Design and conduct research on priority human rights issues and produce reports, briefing papers, commentaries, press releases and statements with actionable policy recommendations.
- Develop policy proposals and advocacy initiatives; pursue advocacy objectives with the UN, the EU, influential governments and other international and regional actors.
- Build and maintain relationships with Egyptian and international human rights organisations, activists, journalists and media outlets.
- Represent CIHRS at high-level meetings, conferences and public events, with international travel as required.
- Collaborate with the Egypt Campaigner and support the Programmes Development Unit with fundraising inputs and quarterly reporting.
Requirements:
- Graduate degree in a relevant social science, legal or humanities field (master's preferred; relevant experience may substitute).
- Excellent written and spoken Arabic and English.
- Minimum 3 years' full-time experience in the human rights field on the Arab region; research and documentation on Egypt an asset.
- Strong understanding of international politics and human rights standards and mechanisms.
- Ability to produce quality written material under tight deadlines, strong public speaking, and ability to run advocacy campaigns.
- Willingness to travel regularly and work in a multicultural environment.
Terms: full-time, one-year renewable contract, working remotely, starting as soon as possible; salary commensurate with experience; 20 days paid vacation plus national holidays.
