Asylum Access is a human rights NGO supporting forcibly displaced individuals and communities to reclaim their rights, agency and power through legal empowerment, policy advocacy and global systems change. The Legal Services Team at Asylum Access Thailand (AAT) provides legal support to refugees in Bangkok and Mae Sot, helping them access justice and protection and navigate Refugee Status Determination (RSD) and National Screening Mechanism (NSM) processes.
Under the guidance of the Legal Services Coordinator, the Project Legal Advisor will implement the Mae Sot legal protection project, which aims to enhance legal protection for Burmese refugees in Mae Sot through legal empowerment and self-protection, building paralegal capacity, and providing direct legal assistance and case management.
Key responsibilities:
- Project management: lead the Mae Sot paralegal project; assess paralegal training needs; develop training curriculum, agendas and materials and organize trainings; coordinate legal clinic schedules; collaborate with other AAT teams; supervise the Project Case Worker.
- Monitoring and evaluation: give feedback on community presentations; maintain program documentation; improve the paralegal training project; contribute to donor reporting; support data collection and analysis.
- Case management and legal assistance: assist clients with protection concerns and issues under Thai law; identify cases for special consideration by UNHCR; maintain case records and detailed notes; keep working knowledge of relevant guidelines and the situation in the country of origin.
- Relationships, networking and advocacy: support the Executive Director in policy advocacy; build relationships with staff, partners, networks and refugee communities in Mae Sot.
Minimum qualifications: demonstrated experience or knowledge of the refugee context and framework internationally and in Thailand; strong analytical, writing and communication skills; strong initiative and attention to detail; advanced PowerPoint and Google Slides; intermediate Gmail, Google Drive and related tools; fluent English and Thai (essential).
Preferred: law degree or equivalent; at least 2 years' experience organizing workshops and legal case management (case intake interviews, monitoring); strong knowledge of SGBV case management; experience with human rights and refugee issues.
Terms: full-time, fixed-term contract up to June 2027, based in Mae Sot, Thailand, 40 hours per week, with occasional travel to Bangkok or other provinces. Salary THB 30,000 per month.
