CorpsAfrica, founded in 2011 and inspired by the Peace Corps model, places African youth as volunteers in rural communities to design and deliver community-led development projects. It is seeking a full-time Safety and Safeguarding Officer in Kampala, Uganda, reporting to the Country Director.
The Officer will lead implementation of CorpsAfrica Uganda's safeguarding, protection and security frameworks to ensure the safety, dignity and well-being of volunteers, staff and community members. The role combines proactive risk management, compliance with national and donor safeguarding standards, and capacity building, and serves as the focal point for safeguarding and security matters.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and monitor safeguarding policies and procedures in line with CorpsAfrica's safeguarding and safety standards.
- Conduct safeguarding risk assessments for office operations and volunteer placements.
- Train and induct staff, volunteers and host community partners on safeguarding, child protection and ethical conduct.
- Maintain confidential case files, follow incident reporting and referral protocols, and escalate serious cases to the Global Safeguarding Lead.
- Map local referral pathways (medical, psychosocial, legal) for survivors of safeguarding incidents.
- Run community awareness sessions on safeguarding standards and reporting channels.
- Submit at least quarterly safeguarding reports to the Global Safeguarding Lead.
- Develop and maintain security protocols, contingency plans and incident-response procedures for the Uganda office and field operations.
- Conduct regular security risk assessments, monitor the local security context, and liaise with OPM, UNHCR, district authorities and security agencies.
- Support emergency preparedness and crisis management, including training and simulations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Human Rights, Human Resources or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in safeguarding, protection or security management in humanitarian or development settings.
- Strong understanding of Ugandan labor laws, safeguarding frameworks and refugee-response policies.
- Proven ability to design and deliver training programs; experience coordinating work-related investigations and reporting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills; fluency in English and local languages; familiarity with refugee contexts in Uganda is an asset.
- Working knowledge of Google Workspace, Salesforce and Canva.
- Commitment to youth leadership, participatory community development, transparency and accountability.
