Re:wild protects and restores the wild, working with Indigenous peoples, local communities, NGOs, governments and companies to address the interconnected climate, biodiversity and human wellbeing crises. Re:wild seeks an experienced Africa Director to lead its work across the continent through a partnership-based model supporting local conservation organizations, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, government agencies, park rangers and emerging conservation leaders. Working with the program's Deputy Director and partners, the Director will evolve and deliver a strategy to scale Re:wild's work in Africa, focusing on biodiversity hotspots and high biodiversity wilderness areas.
Responsibilities:
- Refine and advance the strategy for Africa and priority sub-regions, aligned with Re:wild's 2030 strategic plan.
- Develop, manage and support implementation of initiatives and projects through new and existing partnerships.
- Build alliances among co-funders, governments, Indigenous Peoples, local communities and international and local NGOs, and match philanthropic investment to high-impact opportunities.
- Lead regional fundraising with the Philanthropy and Executive teams, creating donor coalitions and developing funding concepts and proposals.
- Lead and manage the Africa team, including recruitment and staff development.
- Coordinate with thematic teams (species recovery, protected area management, exploration, leadership cultivation, strategic communications).
- Align work with political opportunities and enabling conditions in the region, and provide regional expertise to colleagues and stakeholders.
Requirements:
- Advanced degree and 15+ years of conservation leadership experience in Africa, including at least 5 years in a senior leadership role (e.g. country director, regional director).
- Experience managing, funding and working within diverse conservation projects, programs and partnerships, particularly with local organizations.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and budget management, and in managing effective teams.
- Strong collaborative and participatory approach; excellent communication skills with donors, board members and partners.
- Fluency in English and French required; Portuguese, Malagasy, Swahili or other African languages preferred.
- Ability to undertake frequent international travel and work across time zones.
- Valid work authorization in the country of hire.
Location: Remote; in-region (Africa) strongly preferred, other locations considered on an exceptional basis. Full-time. Salary range $115,000 to $130,000 plus benefits, commensurate with experience.
