Organisational Unit: Victims Participation and Reparations Section (VPRS), Registry. Duty Station: The Hague, Netherlands. Contract Duration: 6 months (full time, dates to be agreed prior to commencement).
The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression.
The VPRS is responsible for facilitating victims' participation in different phases of the proceedings, and reparations following a conviction. It establishes the link between victims in the field and proceedings at the Court, undertakes field operations enabling victims to make applications for participation and reparations and to be legally represented, and at the seat of the Court manages applications and related documents received from victims, transmitting them to those involved in the relevant proceedings and assisting Chambers by analysing the applications. The VPRS provides data, statistics and assessments on victims' applications to Chambers and other stakeholders, including legal representatives of victims (LRV), the Office of Public Counsel for Victims (OPCV) and the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV). The Section is organised into three units: the Field Unit, the Data Processing Unit (responsible for registering and entering victims' application forms into the VPRS confidential database and preparing applications for transmission to the Judges) and the Legal Unit.
Duties and Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Victims' Applications Manager, the intern will support the Data Processing Unit by assisting with the input of confidential data into electronic and/or hard-copy systems, including scanning, photocopying and filing; helping maintain the database by identifying inaccuracies or missing information; extracting information (e.g. statistics, tables) to support internal reports; redacting materials for external communication; supporting team members by preparing summaries, conducting advanced searches and generating reports using the Section's electronic tools; assisting in testing new IT tools for improved data processing and relevant research into solutions; attending meetings or presentations when requested and preparing minutes; and assisting with other tasks as needed, including occasional support to other units within the Section. Applicants should be aware that some materials may contain sensitive narratives or images related to serious international crimes.
Essential Qualifications: A first level university degree from an accredited university, or being in the final stages of relevant studies, with a very good record of academic performance. Practical experience is not an essential prerequisite, though relevant experience may be considered an asset; applicants must have less than three years of relevant full-time professional experience. Skills: ability to adapt to a multicultural and multilingual working environment; good computer skills, with knowledge of data processing/database handling and Power BI or ArcGIS considered an asset; strong teamwork skills; discretion, reliability, intellectual rigour, precision, perseverance, creativity, co-operative spirit and integrity. Languages: proficiency in one working language of the Court (English or French) and working knowledge of the other; knowledge of another official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration: Internship and visiting professional placements at the ICC are unfunded. The ICC cannot provide remuneration or reimbursement of expenses incurred before, during or after the placement; applicants must be able to support themselves for the entire duration of the internship.
