AMREF Flying Doctors is the leading aero-medical provider in Africa. Based in Nairobi, Kenya, at Wilson Airport, it provides air evacuation services in medical emergencies as well as air ambulance transfers between medical facilities, with patients repatriated to Europe, Asia and North America by air ambulance jet or medical escort on commercial carriers. Job purpose: To provide treatment and stabilization of acutely or chronically ill and/or injured patients across the lifespan during transfer to referral hospitals or trauma centres. The Locum Flight Nurse renders skilled pre-hospital and emergency life support care and conducts transfers by air or ground transport to a superior healthcare facility, committed to safe operations, premier customer service and expert clinical practice during all medical evacuations.
Responsibilities: Operate the 24-hour Control Room, receiving and responding to telephone, radio (UHF/VHF) and email communication, ensuring accurate coordination with patients, families, hospitals, EMS providers and aviation operators. Receive, assess and coordinate emergency evacuation requests, follow up on admitted patients, liaise on cost estimates and obtain Guarantees of Payment. Maintain complete, accurate and confidential patient records, reports and shift handovers. Assemble, inspect and prepare medical equipment, medications and supplies for missions and confirm travel/medical documentation. Accompany patients on air ambulance missions and commercial medical escorts regionally and internationally; conduct patient assessment, develop and implement treatment plans, deliver advanced life support, stabilization and resuscitation, and monitor patients throughout transport. Safely transfer patients between facilities, ambulances and aircraft, conduct formal clinical handovers, and manage admission/discharge and immigration requirements. Clean, disinfect, sterilize and restock equipment, complete inventories and report defects. Respond to mass casualty incidents, disasters and emergency deployments, and provide medical coverage at special events. Work under a scheduled roster in confined spaces and challenging environmental conditions.
Qualifications: Kenyan Registered Nurse with a valid Nursing Council of Kenya practice licence; Higher National Diploma in Intensive Care Nursing (BScN an added advantage); 4 years' nursing experience including 2 years in an ICU; current ACLS, ATLS and PALS certification with pre-hospital emergency care experience; computer proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM, Outlook). Teaching/instructor status and critical care transport experience (ground or air) are added advantages. Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills; calm under pressure; high integrity and confidentiality; strong problem-solving and attention to detail. Part-time/locum role within a twenty-four-hour work environment.
