The European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere (ESO) is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive ground-based astronomical observatory, operating three observing sites in the Chilean Atacama Desert. ESO is building the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), the largest optical and near-infrared telescope on Earth, with partners across Europe and in Chile. ESO's Headquarters are in Garching near Munich, Germany. ESO's Department of Communication (ESO COMM) is responsible for all aspects of internal and external communication for the Organisation, including audiovisual productions that excite the public about science, astronomy and engineering.

As Audiovisual Media Intern you will support ESO's Creative Team, part of ESO COMM, in numerous video productions - such as the hosted show Chasing Starlight with Suzanna Randall, a documentary on the construction of the ELT, and explainers about scientific discoveries. You will work alongside seasoned professionals in film, animation and graphic design, participating in all stages of the production workflow from pre-production to release, with a focus on video editing. You will also help structure footage, prepare interviews and maintain archives, and will learn how a large international scientific organisation works, how to edit videos for science communication across formats and audiences, and how to collaborate within a diverse multinational team.

Main duties: video editing for various lengths, formats and audiences; structuring interviews, preparing footage and creating compilations; assisting with video recordings on location and in the studio; organising archival footage; additional audiovisual tasks as required.

Requirements: highly motivated and proactive students or graduates of Audiovisual Media or a comparable degree programme; experience in video editing, audio processing and working with camera and lights (a demo reel or video portfolio is requested); experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe Premiere; experience in post-production or motion graphics is a strong plus; ability to work under pressure to agreed deadlines and standards; ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team; ability to collaborate across cultures and disciplines. A good command of English is essential as it is the working language; Spanish or German is a plus.

Internship details: internships take place in Garching, Germany (remote or hybrid is not possible) and last 6 months. Accommodation is provided along with a monthly allowance to cover living expenses, plus the cost of a return trip from/to the home station. ESO does not sponsor visas for this internship; applicants are responsible for securing their own right to enter, live and work in Germany. Recruitment preference is given to nationals of ESO Member States, host states and strategic partners.

Closing date: 31/12/2026

HOW TO APPLY:
Apply online at http://jobs.eso.org/. Applications must be completed in English and should include a motivation letter (1 page) and a CV (1-2 pages). Applicants must also provide links to past work samples, a demo reel or portfolio; for collaborative projects, indicate which parts of the production you were specifically responsible for. Only complete applications with all required materials in English will be accepted. Internships start every March and September; as this is a rolling position there is no fixed application deadline, and applications received less than 3 months prior to the starting date will be considered for the next open slot.
