Salary: Up to £82,500 plus performance-based bonus/commission (on-target earnings c.£115,500, with additional upside for exceptional performance)

About the role:
Reporting directly to the Project Director, this role is accountable for end-to-end commercial performance and revenue delivery for the Council’s broader convening portfolio including the World Energy Congress, World Energy Impact series and other bespoke convenings.
The role requires close collaboration across the Secretariat and the wider Council network to fully leverage the organisation’s global reach and relationships.
As the Sales Director, you will play a pivotal role in strengthening sponsorship proposition and value, driving revenue growth, securing key partnerships, and contributing to the overall success of the Congress and the Council. You will further support maximising synergies with our partner propositions and cocreating convening strategies for the Council.
The successful candidate will be a seasoned sales professional with a deep understanding of the energy industry with an existing client portfolio and proven track record of event sales (sponsorship, exhibition, delegates). This role requires a highly proactive, commercially driven leader with the pace, ownership and network to unlock opportunities and convert them into revenue at scale.
Key Responsibilities:
Revenue Ownership & Delivery:
• Own and deliver revenue targets across the Council’s convening portfolio including the World Energy Congress (c. $10m international target) and the World Energy Impact series spanning sponsorship, exhibition, and delegate sales
• Develop and execute the commercial strategy and annual sales plan, ensuring consistent revenue growth and diversification
• Maintain accurate forecasting and sufficient pipeline coverage to deliver against targets
Sales Strategy, Process & Pipeline Management:
• Establish and lead a best-in-class sales operating model, including market segmentation and account prioritisation
• Own end-to-end pipeline management, driving conversion across all stages and ensuring strong funnel health
• Enforce disciplined CRM usage, ensuring full data integrity, visibility, and reporting accuracy
Sales Leadership & Team Performance:
• Build, lead and manage a high-performing international sales team with clear targets (individual and team) and accountability
• Drive a performance-led culture through regular pipeline reviews, coaching, and capability development
Global Sales, Network & Partnerships:
• Lead global sales efforts, including key strategic accounts and priority markets, while managing and optimising an international sales agent network
• Secure and grow long-term partnerships with senior stakeholders across the global energy ecosystem
• Work across the full World Energy Council ecosystem including Member Committees, partners, and the wider network to unlock market access, originate opportunities, and drive sales
Commercial Proposition & Go-to-Market Execution:
• Ensure all Congress and convening products remain competitive, compelling, and differentiated in the global market, with clear commercial value for partners and stakeholders.
• Work closely with Marketing to design and execute targeted sales campaigns, ensuring strong lead generation, conversion, and alignment to priority sectors and markets
• Partner with Programme and Operations to align commercial offerings with content, positioning, and delivery
• Proactively identify, monitor, and manage commercial risks (market, geopolitical, pipeline, and delivery-related), implementing mitigation strategies to protect revenue performance
Market Intelligence & Reporting:
• Monitor market dynamics and competitor activity to inform sales strategy and pricing
• Provide clear, data-driven reporting on revenue performance, pipeline health, forecast accuracy, and risks to senior leadership
SUCCESS MEASURES:
• Delivery of agreed revenue targets across all income streams, with consistent edition-on-edition growth
• Strong, qualified pipeline with healthy coverage and conversion rates, supported by accurate forecasting within agreed tolerance levels
• Maintain competitiveness and market positioning of Congress and convening products, with clear differentiation against peer events
• Growth in strategic accounts, long-term partnerships, and repeat business across priority markets
• Effective deployment of Member Committees and the wider council network and international sales agents to generate and convert global leads
• Execution of targeted, marketing-led campaigns delivering measurable lead generation and conversion across priority sectors
• A high-performing, accountable sales team with clear targets, supported by robust CRM discipline and structured reporting to senior leadership
About you:
• Proven track record in event sales (sponsorship, exhibition, and delegates), with demonstrated success in securing high-value, multi-stakeholder deals and strategic partnerships
• Proven understanding of the energy sector and adjacencies, including key players, trends and market dynamics
• Proven ability to convert new relationships and develop new propositions
• Possess a strong client portfolio within the energy sector
• Exceptional leadership and team management skills
• Demonstrable negotiation and communication skills
• Ability to travel globally as needed
• Experience in managing sales pipelines and utilizing CRM systems
• Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field (MBA is a plus)
