Overview Application

Description

This role is subject to funding.

Fixed Term – 6 Months, with possible extension of up to 6 months subject to additional funding
The starting salary package for this position is £70,324 GBP / approx. $93,038 USD including all allowances.

About MAG:
MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role:
The Technical Field Manager – Weapons & Ammunition Management will implement our Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) work in Papua New Guinea and across the Pacific Islands, ensuring weapons and ammunition are managed safely, securely, and in line with IATGs and MOSAICs standards, as well as MAG’s Standard Operating Procedures. Based in Papua New Guinea with regular travel and deployments within the Pacific Island region, you will oversee SALW and PSSM technical assessments, storage rehabilitation and construction, disposal activities, and the safe delivery of all WAM operations. We will rely on you to guide complex technical work, support governments to strengthen national capacity, and mentor and develop national teams. You will work closely with state institutions, communities, and regional stakeholders to support long term safety and accountability. In this role, you have the chance to apply your expertise where it has lasting impact, shaping systems that reduce harm and support stability.

About the Papua New Guinea programme:
MAG’s programme in Papua New Guinea works to support the national government and security forces to better secure and account for their stocks of firearms and SALW. The programme conducts technical assessments to prioritise Physical Stockpile and Security Management (PSSM) needs and implements measures identified through these assessments. MAG is entering an exciting new phase, with plans to explore and expand activities across the wider Pacific Islands region. The team is based in Port Moresby, with regular travel across the region.

Requirements:
You are an experienced WAM professional with a strong background in SALW and PSSM operations in developing and complex contexts. You have managed field operations and lead, mentored, and developed diverse teams, often working independently with minimal supervision. You are comfortable engaging government counterparts and operating in politically and culturally sensitive environments, bringing a practical, solutions focused approach to challenging technical work. You are organised and disciplined, able to plan activities, manage budgets, meet deadlines, and contribute effectively to reporting and proposals. You communicate clearly, work well across cultures, and are committed to MAG’s humanitarian mandate and high standards of safety and quality. Areas of operations are often remote with basic amenities, so you will need to be able to live and work in challenging environments for extended periods.

We’re looking for someone with:
• Technical knowledge of WAM type activities and operations
• Experience building effective working relationships in cross cultural environments, both internally and externally
• Experience developing, reviewing, and complying with security and technical Standard Operating Procedures
• Explosive Ordnance Qualification to IMAS Level 3 meeting the requirements as established in IMAS 09.30/01/2022. This can be from a relevant and recognised military, civilian or HMA NGO.

Please note that as part of MAG's commitment to safeguarding, this post is subject to background checks before an offer of employment is confirmed. For more information on MAG’s approach to safeguarding and background checks on our website.

MAG is committed to the principles of diversity, equality and inclusion. If you think you would be suited to one of our roles we would welcome your application regardless of your background. We strive to provide an inclusive and supportive working environment where all employees feel respected and supported in fulfilling their potential.

Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Benefits:
• Renumeration Package: £70,324 per annum including basic salary and all allowances and this increases with service.
• Accommodation: MAG will provide accommodation in-country.
• Leave: We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. You will have a minimum of eight weeks out of the programme per year. This will be pro-rated as the contract is less than a year.
• Flights: MAG provides three international flights home per year pro rata if your contract is less than a year.
• Insurance: Internationally contracted, programme based staff are automatically covered by MAG's comprehensive insurance package including: Personal accident and medical expenses insurance; Death by natural causes insurance and access to 24-hour medical assistance.

HOW TO APPLY:
Please apply by submitting a CV detailing your suitability for the role through the link below before the closing date of 6th May 2026. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis, and we reserve the right to close this advertisement early if we receive enough suitable applicants. Therefore, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

MAG will support the successful applicant with any visa or work permit required, including application, administration and costs, however applicants will need to be able to obtain these within a reasonable time period to be considered for the role, due to programme needs.

We are happy to provide more details about the role. Please email us at recruitment@maginternational.org for more details if required.
