Professional Experience:
I have 18 years of experience working in resource economics and rural development mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. I have acquired much expertise both academically and through interaction with rural households, public and private sectors. I have excellent expertise in program management that I have acquired through training and the organizations I have worked with in rural areas. I also have outstanding expertise in conducting research both for academic and policy influencing dialogue at a national and international level that contribute to rural transformation. For example, I have been hired as a consultant by the World Bank and the African Development Bank to develop appreciate policies strategies that can be used to make input subsidy programs a success in Africa, using Malawi as a case study. I have published my research findings in top journals like American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, Climate Change, and Development Studies. I have also published policy briefs on several issues, like soil fertility management, the fertilizer subsidy program in Malawi and maize variety adoption and given presentations on such matters at policy level both national and regional level to policy makers, donors, and the private sector.
Currently, I am working for the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) as a Socio-economist based in the Southern Africa Region Office, Harare, Zimbabwe. I am responsible for Southern Africa countries that include Malawi, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, and Lesotho and Swaziland. My work involves close collaboration with national Government staff on policy dialogue and also directly with smallholder farmers. In CIMMYT, I am responsible for conducting socioeconomic studies in maize based farming systems to assess the adoption and impact of the improved varieties. I have also been responsible for managing some projects that demanded collaboration between the private and public sectors. I have also spearheaded the transformation of data collection methods in CIMMYT from the paper-based questionnaire to Computer Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) platforms (SurveyBe, ODK, Survey Solutions) and further to mobile data collection and monitoring. Regarding data analysis, I have excellent skill in econometrics using cross-section and panel data. I have excellent expertise in conducting impact assessment with advanced econometric methods. With these skills, I have been responsible for training and building capacity for M&E staff in the region national partners and also CIMMYT staff.
Previously, I worked for the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) as a Researcher in Climate Change Economics based in London, United Kingdom.
