Media, communications, advocacy and external relations expert with more than 20 years of experience in international organisations, including in humanitarian emergencies. Has worked in senior positions in Afghanistan, East and Central Africa, Western Europe, and the Balkans. Former TV and radio journalist, an accomplished video producer and media trainer.
Member of the senior management team in 7 UNHCR offices and operations 2002-2016: Afghanistan, Kenya, UK, Chad, Kosovo, Sweden, South Sudan. Deputy Spokesperson of the OSCE 1998-2001, Project Coordinator and trainer of professional journalists for a Danish project in SE Europe 2001-2002. Public Information Officer for the UNHCR in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia 1995-1998. Before joining the UNHCR, I was a journalist with the Finnish Broadcasting Company, Foreign News Editor, Diplomatic Correspondent and Central Europe Correspondent.
MA in History, Archaeology and Classical Arabic, University of Helsinki, Finland (1988). Professional trainings include: UNHCR Management Learning Programme, UNHCR Mediation for Managers, UNHCR Workshop on EU/ECHO Fundraising Strategies, ERA Workshop on EU Asylum Policy, UNDSS Workshop on UN Security Management.
After finishing my BA, I joined the teaching staff at the University of Helsinki and was part-time lecturer in the history of the Middle East 1979-89. As I became Central Europe Correspondent based in Vienna in 1990, I had to leave my academic career.
