Professional Experience: |
As a student at Hofstra University, I acquired leadership, budget development, event coordination, and teambuilding skills. Upon graduation, I moved to Ghana where I worked with Junior Achievement Africa’s Regional Operating Center (ROC) in multiple capacities, from program management to communications, to providing administrative support to the President. The small staff of the ROC meant I was able to wear many hats while supporting the high-pressure environment of the Office of the President for Africa. In addition to my role as Executive Assistant, my responsibilities as the Programs Assistant involved generating and proofreading financial and narrative reports for both internal and external use- including submission to partners and donors, and preparing materials for office-level and Board of Director meetings. I also routinely assisted with the coordination of regional and local events, served as the point-of-contact for the regional office, dispersed grant funds to country offices, and managed office petty cash. I collaborated with key donors, partners, and country directors, and supported JA Africa staff at various levels. While in this position I honed my administrative competencies including attention to detail, adaptability, communication, organization and prioritization skills, and my skills with technology.
In 2018, I graduated from the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University with an M.A. in Sustainable International Development. This was a two-year program that combined rigorous academic training with practical engagement and research in a key development issue of our time. My coursework included Planning and Implementation, a class that took us through the life-cycle of programs, and a Fundraising and Development class where we learne about grant funding and the proposal writing process. Through this coursework and a seven-month practicum at the grant(only?)-funded African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in Nairobi, Kenya, my Master’s degree has given me further experience in using data management software such as Excel, conducting research, working independently and as part of a team, and doing so in high-pressure, fast-paced environments. While in Nairobi I worked with a team of researchers evaluating a national Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) pre-school pilot intervention – the Tayari (readiness) program.
