My professional journey in public health spans across multiple roles in program management, technical leadership, and capacity development, particularly focusing on malaria, infectious disease prevention, and health system strengthening. Below is a summary highlighting key experiences over the years.
Program Management Specialist – USAID Myanmar (Feb 2018 - Present)
As a Program Management Specialist with the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) at USAID Myanmar, I serve as an Agreement Officer’s Representative (AOR) for a bilateral malaria project. I manage project implementation, conduct site visits, and ensure that frontline health activities are effective. I also collaborate with national and international partners to leverage behavioral science for increasing community adherence to malaria prevention measures.
I lead co-creation workshops on surveillance, case management, and health system strengthening, alongside technical advisory responsibilities in health security projects. I serve as a country technical advisor, providing insights to USAID’s regional and global health teams, and moderate several technical meetings with donors, implementing partners, and other stakeholders.
Capacity Development Director – Jhpiego (Oct 2016 - Jan 2018)
In my role as Capacity Development Director for the Defeat Malaria project, I led capacity-building initiatives and provided strategic direction for malaria elimination activities in Myanmar. I ensured Jhpiego's interventions were technically sound and aligned with national health policies. I offered technical assistance to the Ministry of Health and Sports, facilitated strategic relationships, and conducted trainings to build the capacity of government, NGOs, and health facility staff. My efforts focused on guiding malaria elimination strategies, capacity strengthening, and supporting the country’s transition towards malaria elimination.
Technical Officer – Malaria Consortium Myanmar (July 2015 - Mar 2016)
At Malaria Consortium, I played a crucial role in operational research, focusing on the use of insecticide-treated clothing among rubber tappers at high risk of malaria. I provided technical support for the development of Standard Operating Procedures, supervised entomological studies, and ensured the supply chain was efficiently managed. I also worked closely with the National Entomology team and presented study findings to policymakers.
Assistant Project Manager – Myanmar Medical Association (Jan 2015 - Jun 2015)
As Assistant Project Manager, I managed two major malaria initiatives: the New Funding Model and the Regional Artemisinin Initiative (RAI). I led training programs, collaborated with donors and stakeholders, and contributed to the National Malaria Treatment Guideline development. I also supported project implementation by providing technical assistance and monitoring progress to meet health targets.
Project Coordinator –WHO Myanmar (2012)
In this role, I supported the National Malaria Control Program in developing annual training and monitoring plans. I conducted field visits, provided on-the-job training to address implementation challenges, and served as a resource person in planning and evaluation meetings. My efforts contributed to the effective implementation of the Global Fund Round 9 grant in Myanmar.
Assistant Director – National Malaria Control Program, Naypyitaw (2010-2011)
I provided leadership in planning and implementing vector-borne disease control, including malaria and dengue, while overseeing operational research. My work included collaborating with stakeholders, leading training initiatives for health staff, and monitoring disease control activities to ensure effective resource utilization and timely intervention.
Regional Surveillance Officer – WHO Myanmar (2009)
As a Regional Surveillance Officer, I led surveillance for vaccine-preventable diseases, contributing to Myanmar’s certifications a Poliomyelitis-Free country.

Education:

My educational background is rooted in both medical practice and public health, allowing me to develop a comprehensive understanding of health systems, clinical expertise, and population health management. I completed my Master of Public Health (MPH) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Netherlands from 2013 to 2014. This program provided me with advanced skills in epidemiology, health policy, and the design and evaluation of public health programs. During my time in Amsterdam, I focused on global health issues and methodologies to improve healthcare systems and outcomes, which greatly influenced my career in public health.
Prior to my MPH, I pursued a Master of Medical Science (M. Med. Sc) at the Institute of Medicine (I), Yangon, Myanmar, from 2004 to 2005. This degree deepened my medical knowledge, particularly in relation to public health challenges prevalent in developing countries. My studies emphasized the importance of integrating clinical care with community health, thus enabling me to gain insights into both the individual and systemic perspectives of health service delivery.
I started my journey in medicine by earning my Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.,B.S) from the Institute of Medicine, Mandalay, Myanmar, between 1993 and 1999. This foundational degree provided me with essential clinical skills and hands-on experience in diagnosing and treating patients. It also laid the groundwork for my understanding of the medical needs and public health challenges faced by communities, particularly in low-resource settings.
This combination of qualifications, spanning clinical practice and public health, has equipped me with a unique blend of skills that enables me to bridge the gap between medical care and public health initiatives effectively. My academic experiences across different institutions have provided me with a well-rounded perspective on healthcare, from understanding individual patient needs to tackling large-scale health crises and policy-making aimed at improving population outcomes. These qualifications underpin my commitment to advancing global health through effective, evidence-based public health strategies and interdisciplinary collaboration.
