AIoha Kakou, I recently ended my tour with USAID in Afghanistan as a Field Program Officer. Within my 35 years of community experience, I have solely worked with indigenous peoples. I have program experiences with a wide range of subject matters such as gender, child health, Global Health, education, governance, rule of law, agriculture, infrastructure, and overall development.

Professional Experience:

Within my 35 years of community experience, I have worked with indigenous peoples in humanitarian assistance in addition to unique special populations in health such as: the serious mentally ill, youth/adults with developmental disabilities, the elderly, the homeless, and immigrant and migrant populations. I have various and numerous program experiences with a wide range of subject matters such as gender, child health, Global Health, education, governance, rule of law, agriculture, infrastructure, and overall development. In these subjects I have had performed strategic and activity planning, M&E, basic budget operations, data collection and analysis and reporting, program reporting, research, and outreach in various capacities.

Education:

I have a Doctorate in Health Sciences (DHSc) with a focus in Global Health; a Masters in Public Health with a focus in International Health, and a Bachelor's of Science in Exercise Science. Additionally I hold a MCHES, a Master Certified Health Education Specialist.

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, 6/2012. Interacted with Mursi, Dorze, Ari, Tsamay, Hamars Tribes to observe social behavior.

Ho Chi Min City, Vietnam 7/1/2011. Volunteered at Temple of Nha Tinh Thuong Dieu Glac Orphanage with 145 orphans from ages 8 months to 18 years old. Handled children with developmental disabilities.

Ulaabaatar, Mongolia, 5/2009-7/2009. Volunteered at the Mongolia Government Orphanage with 260 orphans from ages 1-17 years old. Instructed physical activity, taught Muay Thai.

Rangpur, Bangladesh and Bhutan, 6/2008-7/2008. Volunteered with Bangladesh Rural Improvement Foundation. Worked in slum and flood-affected communities, mothers and infants in growth monitoring, and micro-credit communities in northern Bangladesh.

Angkor, Cambodia, 6/2007-7/2007: Volunteered with Globeaware. Assembled wheelchairs for landmine victims, and provided victim assistance risk education.

Galle & Pinnewala, Sri Lanka, 6/2006-7/2006: Volunteered with Shambhala children orphanage and Elephant Orphanage. Instructed art classes for the children and scooped dung, bathe, and fed elephants.

Lhasa,Tibet, 9/2005-10/2005: Planned to volunteer to do tuberculosis outreach training for villagers outside Lahsa; however, community plan fell through.

World Health Organization (WHO), Healthy Cities Project, Thailand and Nepal Field Training Internship 5/99 – 8/99
Analyzed five Healthy City projects in Thailand (Bangkok, Korat, Yala, and Phayao) and Nepal (Banepa): in collaboration WHO Healthy Cities Advisors. Worked various HIV infected communities, health promoting communities and schools, public health clinics and hospitals. In Nepal, consulted the Mayor of Banepa, a Healthy Cities project town, and World Health Organization representatives on improvements and recommendations of Banepa, a rural community of 20,000 people. Presented results and recommendations to local mayor and WHO representative to make decisions on health sanitation initiatives.

Sports Medical Massage Clinic, Galapagos Islands, Puerto Ayora, Ecuador, Sports Therapist 10/93–1/94
Implemented and managed my own primary health care orthopedic clinic for residents of the Galapagos Islands. Minimized residents of the island to travel to mainland Ecuador for basic orthopedic care. Performed Chinese Medical and Sports Massage Therapy with exercise prescriptions. Planned and evaluated an orthopedic health care system that best fit the Galapagos community. Traveled by foot to serve those who did not have transportation to the clinic.

The United States Peace Corps, Ecuador, South America, Health Promoter 8/91–10/93
Educated communities on dengue, cholera, HIV prevention, breast-feeding, immunizations, and growth monitoring. Implemented an orthopedic rehabilitation program and performed as a “Barefoot Therapist” for physically challenged residents of rural coastal villages of Ecuador. Conducted and traveled to rural communities to promote and administer immunization for pregnant mothers, children, and dogs (diphtheria, polio, MMR, rabies). Performed house visits for growth monitoring children 3-5 years of age.
